Style Fashion Week: Cipriani

It’s New York Fashion Week and all of New York City (I exaggerate, not all of New York City) is enjoying the scenes, the festivities and the shows. I am not a fashionista and not invited to most shows and I rely on the recap done by the New York Times for my season looks from my favorite designers. Watching for my couch may very well be better than waiting to watch shows from seats that are not front row. I kid, it’s always better to see and hear and feel the entire aesthetic but the constant run to shows can be hectic and should be left to the professionals who does this. I did manage to watch a show put on by Style Fashion Week held at NYC’s famed restaurant, Cipriani. The energy was great and the people were all fantastic. The designers were varied and the looks were both funky and pretty.

Sensational Saturday: L Train Vintage Furs

I’m driving through Williamsburg, Brooklyn and could not help but stop into one of my favorite vintage stores. I’ve been trying to find a teddy bear coat or fur coat because they are on trend. I tend to follow trends, not to the extreme, but add maybe one piece that is on trend at the moment in my closet. I don’t walk to walk around in clothes that I won’t feel great in two months from now. I follow my little shopping ♡ when I see a trend. If a piece is still on my mind after weeks or months of me thinking about it, then I act on it. Go out and buy the piece girl!

Well, thats what happened at L Train Vintage today. I stopped in to try on some vintage coats hoping to find a piece with some character and something that I may still love after the trend dies down. I bought a great black coat from the 70s, in great condition, for $18. It fit like a glove but I have no pictures of me in it. My photog, my daughter, wasn’t feeling my coat of choice so she inadvertently took no pictures of me in it. She has tons of pictures of me trying on some fur pieces though. I was low-key in love with the shrugs but did not pick one up because I’m trying to practice self control.

This bag is almost as popular as the Bloomies bag at this point. Am I exaggerating? Maybe just a little.

Photo Walk: Apple Store Downtown Brooklyn

It’s Saturday, 2:30pm and 50 degrees in January, in a usually blistery Brooklyn, NY. The warm weather really brings the entire borough out. It’s a great time to vibe, walk and really take in all of the great sights (architecture, colors, flavors) and sounds of Brooklyn. That is exactly what we did a bit of in Fort Greene with Apple, Downtown Brooklyn. We strolled around BAM, past historic brownstones and landmarks in Downtown Brooklyn, all while taking tips from two pros from Apple.

My Favorite Images From The Photo Walk:

Saturday Night Lights: Stewart Hotel NYC

Is there anything better than spending a Saturday night in NYC? Face it. The answer is, “no.”  I had the opportunity to spend a Saturday night in a fantastic hotel opposite Madison Square Garden at the stylishly chic Stewart Hotel recently.

First off, you enter the lobby and feel like you’ve been transported to sunny South Beach. There is a cool updated, Art Deco vibe to the decor. It’s light, airy, large windows and luxe delails like guilded elevator doors provides a classic NYC vibe.

The rooms are spacious, impeccable and perfectly Instagrammable. The Stewart is a perfect 10.

The seating is a luxe green velvet. It’s Art Deco but modern at the same time.

Sunday Brunch: Goop Edition

I find it absolutely amazing that actress, Gwyneth Paltrow had the vision to start a lifestyle website/blog years ago and turned it into a multi-million dollar empire. I have been a fan of Goop for years, since it’s inception actually, and have watched the site grow from some recipes and lifestyle pictures to a world of crystals, sage smuges, beauty, vitamins, mediation ideas, fashion and style to household/living asthetics.

Think of Martha Stewart but on the hipster end. Palthrow gets it right though. This is not a fleeting Empire. She is here to stay. I know we all hear folks talking about “building brands” but Goop has become a true brand. One that we know to expect healthy and holistic views on all things woman.

Today we are looking into one of Palthrow’s books, “It’s All Easy” and finding some Sunday Brunch ideas that the whole family will love.

A Goop Sunday Brunch is nothing without avacado toast and an acai bowl:

Hudson Hotel: NYC Staycation

IMG_7254IMG_7263IMG_7265IMG_7266IMG_7267There is nothing I love more than an overnight stay in Manhattan. As a Brooklynite, Manhattan is a stones throw from home but it seems worlds away from Brooklyn. Well, truthfully, Brooklyn now feels like the new Manhattan. I still enjoy the respite. Maybe I just like waking up in a new space. A new room. A new bed.

We visited the Hudson Hotel in NYCs Columbus Cirlse recently and ever though the rooms there are small, the hotel itself is full of fun (adult) activities.

Thrre are two amazing yet quaint bars that whose decor make you feel like you are in someone’s IG picture. Don’t leave without a visit to Umami Burger. The restraint is amazing and they serve breakfast, lunch and dinner. There is an amazing fireplace inside of the restaurant and you can nosh and sip on a leather couch in front of the fire. You can’t do that at home?

Coins, Cheddar, Cloth Talk: Money Edition

You’ve heard DJ Khalad tell the message to the people, “secure the bag!” Now, just in case you aren’t versed in hip hop culture, the simple meaning for “securing the bag” is make money and secure or save it.

Secure-(adj)- fixed or fastened so as not to give way, become loose, or be lost.

There is no better way to describe making and keeping money than to secure it. We often lose the money that we obtain (and don’t just blame it on not making enough) because we don’t know how to secure it. We spend frivolously on this that we will dispose of in a few weeks or months or we splurge on items that we truly can’t afford.

Many of us are functioning on minimal financial literacy. We don’t know how to save, regardless of what we make, and we don’t know ways to make our money grow. Well, now that I’ve outlined the problems, What is the solution? Financial literacy.

IMG_0282

Educate yourself by reading magazines like Money Magazine. If you are on the web then google ways to save money or invest money. If social media is your thing then follow professional or even amateur financial gurus. There are some great people out there saving and investing and doing it using working class salaries and are basically self taught.

IMG_0285IMG_0284

Whatever you choose to do, however way you choose to learn about your money, do learn about your money. Start by reading over your bank or 401k statements on a consistent basis. Keep track of your money and learn how to decipher your losses and gains. If you are losing money in an investing area cut your losses and stop investing in that particular option. I learned a few months back that I was losing a ton of money in my 401k because I was investing in bonds that consistently lost money every three months! I would not have been aware of that if I weren’t reading my statements.

Learn, Save, Invest, Spin and Repeat.

What I Wore Today: Bomb Cyclone Edition

If you are on the East Coast you are probably snowed in today. We’ve been experiencing some fridigit temps for the past few weeks on the East Coast. Our friends in the South have also had unseasonably cold temperatures. It’s like 44 degrees in Miami at night! Why?!

The unfair temperatures have forced me to hibernate more and find indoor activities to partake in instead of having to brave the cold.

I can’t always escape the cold temps, as much as I would like to, and that means I have to dress to conquer the weather. We are currently under a storm watch and there is a “Bomb Cyclone” advisory on today. A what? A Bomb Cyclone. It sounds freaking scary and I’ve never heard anything of the like before. It feels like a typical snowstorm only wish more winds.

We stayed in and are binge watching Black Mirror. We had to go out to shovel our walk so I decided to throw on a little lip and put on my favorite sunglasses for fun.

Enjoy!

Making Better Decisions In Life and At Work.

The book “Decisive” by Chip Heath and Dan Heath is technically a business self help book but in it is a decision making Strategy that is golden and one that can be applied in most areas of life be it work or home.

Chip and Dan uses a strategy that they’ve  concisely made in the acronym “WRAP”.

W- Widen Your Options

R- Reality Test Your Assumpsions

A- Attain Distance Before Deciding

P- Prepare to Be Wrong

It’s easy to remember the “how to” in the decision making process by remembering this acronym. The word WRAP also gives me the feeling to “wrap up” important decisions when I’m faced with them versus avoiding or floundering . Wrap it up! Let’s get into the details of WRAP:

IMG_0275

1) Widen your options when you encounter a choice. Do all that you can to expand your set of options. Ask questions or looks at decisions from another perspective. Narrow framing of decisions makes you miss options.

2) Realuty test your assumptions. It’s important to look at decisions from other perspectiv. Get outside of your own head and collect valid and trustworthy information. Ask qualifier questions. Understand and know your biases and put them aside.

3) Attain distance before deciding. Short term biased emotions can cause us to make ill choices so it’s important to overcome those conflicted feelings in order to make the best choice.

4) Prepare to be wrong. Who wants to be wrong? No one, but the truth is there are times we make wrong decisions not because we want to but because they happen. Our day to day decisions like where to eat lunch are often effortless but the tough decisions can take a toll. If decisions are wrong we want to minimize collateral damage like anger or hurt when a new direction is being taken. We want a sense of fairness (within a group that the decision affects).

The WRAP process, if used routinely, will contribute to a sense of fairness, because it allows people to understand how the decision is being made, and it provides comfort that decisions will be made in a consistent manner. We all strive off of consistency.

Holiday Wrap Up

It always feels like we anticipate Christmas and the December holiday season for months yet when they do they come, they tend to leave us briskly. There is something to be said for awaiting Christmas morning and remembering the joy you felt as a kid. I don’t know many adults who have the same anticipation as they had in their childhood days but that’s normal.

Hopefully as adults we are serving as givers of joy to those who may need it, to adults and children alike.

This smile did not come from possessing a material “thing”, it came from being surrounded by unconditional love and the joy of others around her.

The smiles this holiday season should truly come from our interactions with people and from new experiences. A soft plush pillow doesn’t hurt either. Pillow: Nordstrom Rack Tassel: Dollar Tree

The holidays were spent at home, very much in the comfort of the bed or the couch. There was no better way to spend the days. Well, the beach is always a good idea but this is NYC so it’s not in the cards for me. Maybe next year.
