We often take care of so many things and people better than we care for ourselves. Self-care is on everyone’s tongue tips at the moment because so many of us just don’t take the time to slow down and grant ourselves small pleasures. Self-care can come as simple as lighting a candle at night to create a calming environment before bed. It can be taking a longer than usual bath or shower. Water does not only help cleanse the body but it also helps to center the mind. I use Sundays as a day where I carve out some time in the week to do some things just for me. there are some products that help to make the pampering just a bit easier. They aren’t pricey, obtainable and most importantly good!!
Finally, now that we’ve worked on pampering and improving the outside, let us focus on the inner health. Detoxing and feeding your body good food is probably the most important part of self-care. Hannah Bronfman, the creator of HBFIT, works out all the time and varies her workouts to fit her mood and body goals. She also eats clean and makes a detox soup from time to time that anyone can make at home. You simply saute these ingredients (onion, zucchini, asparagus and celery) in a pot, add stock (salt and pepper) and then blend. You’ve got soup for a few days!
The most recent Curlbox Natural box has been dubbed the “Bohemian Summer Box”. Who doesn’t love a Bohemian girl with free flowing curls? The box went on sale at curlbox.com and sold for $40. It’s a great deal because of the five full sized products that fill the box. The incredible True by Made Beautiful products are free of sulfates, parabens and silicones. I know that this is key for many curly girls but is not really a priority for me. I figured the sale of the box as a great time to try the “curly girl” styling products for the month of August and see if I really see a difference in my hair’s health.
The True products have a great fruity scent. It is infused with shea, honey, coconut and mango. There is a full line of products in your box to cleanse and style your curls. The co-wash was good but I have not been using a load of gels or styling products in my hair so there is not much to cleanse. I fear that if I go heavy on the gels then I may have to grab a bottle of shampoo. Overall, the line is great. I’m very pleased that I can use it on my daughter’s hair as well. I adore the leave-in-conditioner and the hydrating hair butter. Your curls are defined and left shiny with very little effort. (Oh, I did add some natural oil along with the hair butter for added shine. I placed a natural oil on my wet hair along with the hair butter and my curls dried defined and oh so soft.)
“My Goodies, My Goodies…” Ciara said it. Well, it’s Sunday so that means time to dip into my shampoos and things. This week I tried The ORS Sulfate Free Shampoo and The Creme of Nature Leave in Detangling Conditioner. I have previously used the Herbal Essences Conditioner before and I love it! It smells like a yummy nut and leaves my hair really soft. I also love the Shea Moisture Treatment Masque. It is a soft, conditioner like masque. It isn’t stiff and tacky like a lot of the hair masques on the market. Let’s take a look at the goods:
The wet curls.
What are your Wash Day staples? Do you change up your routine every week?
As I laid in bed recouping from what feels like the deadliest cold ever, aches and pains through every bone and sinus in my body, I realized that this time spent laying down is the perfect time to indulge in some podcast listening and magazine reading. I would like to share two of my favorite things that I listened to/read while in bed and I am hoping that it will help jumpstart those New Year goals. You can’t just talk the talk, you have to walk the walk.
I highly recommend listening to:
1) Myleik’s Podcast on Podomatic. Google Podomatic and sign up to listen to her podcast. It’s free!
MYLEIK!! You may know her, you may not. She is the CEO (Chief Experience Officer) of an amazing beauty box called Curlbox. She is beyond dynamic and I love her ability to share her goals, fears, and drive toward success with her customers to anyone willing to listen. I appreciate the openness because not everyone is very open about success and struggles. She is chock full of knowledge and her podcasts are a great way to get your thinking back on track.
I Highly Recommend Reading:
1) The read up in most recent issue of Fast Company Magazine on “Secrets of the Most Productive People” is an easy read and once again there are no magic solutions, just comparisons of highly effective people and it is your task to incorporate the jewels you learn. Just do it like Nike says. Also, take the time to read a provocative piece written interview style on “Silicon Valley’s Race Problem”. We know there aren’t many Black People in high profile tech jobs and this interview with some brilliant Black Techies shed some light on an issue that I am not very versed in. Gotta get my 10-year old coding.

Your brand is not your logo. Work on the brand and not the logo.
Do a few things and do them uncommonly well.

So, I just mentioned that I needed to try the Jamaican Black Castor Oil line from SheaMoisture a few weeks ago and just like that my September Curlbox delivered my wish! Hey Curlbox, If I ask to hit the Powerball Lottery will that wish be granted too? Since you guys are making wishes come true and all I thought I would ask. LOL. All joking aside folks, this is a MEGA box with four full-sized products and 1 trial size tube of “Extra Moisture Detangler”. All of the products can be used separately or in conjunction with each other (with the exception of the Treatment Masque). I love when I can use the products in the box together. It gives the box a more cohesive feel. Lets get into this September Box!
The July Curlboxwas curated with Walmart and the products inside of the box were all chosen with a summer beach vacation in mind. The box was the perfect thing for me to choose a few products from that I wouldn’t normally use for my beach vacation wash and go style. The box was chuck full of goodies but I pulled the Aussie 3 Moist Minute Miracle Conditioner and the Herbal Essences Hair Milk. The two products worked great together. The conditioner hydrated my curls instantly and the hair milk eased all of the tangles out of my washed hair. All I needed to do was finger comb my curls and go.
